Turning a garage sale desk from a zero to a hero...A super hero that is!

I have been slowly updating B man's bedroom.  He is not a child who is open to change.  In fact anything that even resembles a change of the normal routine can cause epic meltdowns.  We are talking volcano eruptions.  So that being said we need to slowly update his room.  When we moved here he had just turned 5 and was in preschool.  He is now a whopping 10 years old.  It's hard to believe that 5 years have passed.  Time flies when you're having fun.

Because he is now 10 and in 3rd grade he decided that he wanted a desk of his own in his bedroom. This allows him to go in there and do his homework in the quiet.  Me and the hubs were completely on board with the idea.  However, we all know that I am a thrifty girl.  I looked around at desks to buy and I couldn't fathom paying over a 100 bucks for a child's desk.  So I did what I do best....I started searching antique shops, yard sales and even the side of the road.

I finally came across this  jewel of a desk at a garage sale.

It was the perfect size and the perfect price.  $10 bucks!  Now that's what I am talking about!  All it needed was a little love and it was perfect for B-man's room.

I removed all the hardware and gave it a good cleaning and then sanded it.  Just enough to scuff it up a bit.

Then it got 2 good coats of Sapphire by Clark and Kensington.  I love this paint.  It has a primer built in and I find it has great coverage.
Then because I wanted the desk to have some pizazz I decided to stripe it.  I thought a grain sack stripe would look awesome.  So I taped it off and added the stripes.
The inside of the drawers were in rough shape.  I picked up some Avenger wrapping paper and mod podged it into the drawers.  This way the drawers are covered and it added a little bit of something fun to the desk.

Here is the final product:

Not too shabby for a $10 dollar desk, some leftover paint and a roll of wrapping paper.  He loves the desk.  And it goes really well with the "updated Super Hero" theme we re trying to go for. Think...Marvel comic books.  I'm super stoked about some of the projects that are coming up.

Stay tuned for more details coming soon...
